| It has been mere months since Hurricane Ike slammed into Galveston, Texas, and most people in America believe that life has resumed and that all the damage has been cleaned up and repaired. The fact is there are many people who still have no place to live and the devastation for many in the coastal areas is permanent. As you drive through the Houston and surrounding areas, the evidence of the devastation is everywhere. There are signs missing, debris that was blown into the trees to high to reach, farm and ranchland covered with furniture and other debris either washed in or blown onto it and blue tarps covering almost every roof while they wait for repairs to be funded and completed. Piles of debris are everywhere and many people remaining missing. Thousands of people are dealing on a daily basis with FEMA and insurance companies desperately trying to find a way to pay for necessary repairs. Let us not forget so quickly our fellow Americans, our fellow humans that are continuing to struggle on a daily basis to meet the most basic of life’s needs: food, shelter, and a sense of well-being. In this age of instant gratification and small attention spans, let us remember there are people right here in our country that need our help and prayers. |
